I was going to write something else today, but that all seems pretty trivial now that the news of Prince’s passing has been confirmed. He was one of the great artists of our time, and someone who had a profound impact on me personally. Besides stubbornly singing “Purple Rain” terribly at every damn karaoke I went to, I was also in a Prince cover band in college. But more so, it’s such a loss for the world. Like Bowie previously, the gaping black hole left in his absence is filled with the immense art he created. I don’t have much more to say. It’s terrible and incomprehensible. Saying he’ll be missed is a woeful understatement, but hopefully, maybe, we can take solace in his art — as we always have.
“Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
2 get through this thing called life
Electric word life
It means forever and that’s a mighty long time
But I’m here 2 tell u
There’s something else
The afterworld
A world of never ending happiness
U can always see the sun, day or night”
“Let’s Go Crazy”
R.I.P., Prince.
