I may not be a 30-year-old owner of a multi-million-dollar fashion company (who started said company at age 22) but I am a slightly well-adjusted 24-year old who somehow survived high school. That counts as advice-giving experience, right?

If not that, reading Sophia Amoruso’s “#GirlBoss” has been a great way for me to take a step back and reflect. As the founder and CEO of Nasty Gal, the fastest-growing online retailer in the country, she delivers career insights through the lens of her unique personal story and rapid rise to success. I should mention that Nasty Gal was built from an eBay account. Just call me a millennial, because I can’t wait to tell you what I think.

What I loved most about the book was Amoruso’s no-nonsense, no-excuses, to-the-point — some would call it brutal — honesty.  She lays it all on the table, and doesn’t try to glam up her grungy beginnings – which involved bagel dumpster diving that would put Ke$ha to shame. She doesn’t hide the feelings of insecurity and mistakes made along the way, and is very apparent about the growing pains, sweat and tears it took to reach this level of success. For instance, Amoruso even admits there was a lot of Googling and disdain for corporate America throughout the growth of her business.  Ultimately, this is not the book for someone who needs a pat on the head after college graduation or during a career change. This book is a real nice kick in the…head.

Sure, there are a couple parts that I would love to challenge Amoruso on, and even some that made me feel a bit uneasy. But why spoil all the fun now when you can all read it and we can hash it out? Ideas and discussion; it’s a beautiful thing!
