Have Smartphone? Have Resolutions.

We have just over a week left in January and science says you all have failed your New Year’s Resolutions!

I’m just kidding. I’m sure you’re all on track to losing that last 15 pounds, have continued to drink gallons of water a day and have finally gotten through the “50 Shades of Grey” trilogy you’ve been meaning to start. I, on the other hand, am definitely feeling the January crunch: that slow and low cloud of disappointment erasing those “goals” I have into the background of my new year.

Science be damned – it’s 2015 – and there’s an app for this. I’m going to share with you the best apps helping me stay on track.

Budgeting

In 2014 there was too much of me saying, “I’m going to save money!” Then a few days of forgetting to bring lunch, and $50 of my hard-earned cash is now in Chipotle’s pockets. I’m going to check out Mint.com Personal Finance. There are a lot of features beyond a simple expense tracker, but it lets you securely sync your bank and card details, providing an up-to-date look at your financial state at any time. You can even pay all your bills in one place or on-the-go. Might be just the thing I need when I want to order a second drink with dinner.

Healthy Eating

It’s a given that the most popular resolution is to lose weight. This year, I wanted to look at it differently and be more conscious of what I’m eating. Fooducate does just that! It has the tracking and motivators we’re used to in health apps, but what makes this great is the handy scanner capabilities. Have you found yourself in the cereal aisle, unsure if something’s gluten-free? This app scans nutrition labels, alerts you when there’s added sugars or other ingredients you should think twice about, and assigns a letter grade to each item – providing alternatives if you’re about to put one too many jars of Nutella in your cart.

Becoming a secret Vino

There’s nothing quite like the anxiety or utter cluelessness of trying to find the right wine. The Delectable app is helping me learn more about the wine I drink and find my favorites. It’s crazy simple, where all you do is snap a pic of the label, and instantly you can see what your friends think of it, get tasting notes, learn about the variety and track it for later.  This app is my starting point. These are just a few examples I’m checking out, and there are an endless options at your fingertips. With just over a week left in January, pick up your phone and get on those resolutions!
